?

What do you do after you have run out of things to write about?

  1. Keep looking around for things to write about, related.

    Hi,

My blog is quite new, and I have tried to write a post a day on it. Although I have a lot to talk about, I am running out of things to say because it's such a specialist topic.

I have gone onto other topics, but I wanted this blog to stay on the theme of online radios, so, what is the next step.

Please vote and give comments :)

buy few articles related to online radio. and start posting, make some good database and information which would help other users benifit and know more about this topic.

Like I say, it's not that I can't write them, it's that theres not much left to write. I've made a small database of info, which covers pretty much everything. But my site is only weeks old, so I can't stop here.

The easiest thing to do would be to shift to another topic where you would not have a dearth of topics to write about.

I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to online radios, so I can't suggest additional topics to write about. My advice is more from a general point of view.

Does your blog rank well for the keywords that you target ? What kind of traffic do you receive ?

And a post a day isn't essential, something like 2-3 in a week will do if the posts are informative.

I would say my topic has lots of things to write about, and I've made 25 articles already. I can't really switch topics with a name like foradio

hmm thanks for the opinions though

I read somewhere that google likes sites that have a post a day, and that you should take precautions like having backup posts, so it's necesarry.

Well, I'm not the expert here really, only on shoutcasts :)

There's plenty left to write about:

    1. You seem to focus a bit too heavily on shoutcast. Write reviews of other Internet radio services and software... anything from Live365 to BlogTalkRadio would work. If you can't "review" them b/c you're not familiar with them, at least write up a post discussing their features, linking to the site, pricing, etc. It should all be available easily. And once you get decent traffic or rankings, start asking for review copies or access to test things for review purposes.

    2. In addition to reviewing them, write up tutorials on actually using them. You could have a general tutorial for each about setting your online radio station up with them, or break it into many smaller tutorials dealing with specific features of each.

    3. Start a sort of mailbag... get people to ask questions about online radio shows, and answer them in posts. If you can't get submissions early, answer questions you find in forums on your blog if they're related.

    4. Talk about different kinds of online radio... from streaming audio to live talk shows.

    5. A lot of shows are hosted. Write up a series on being an effective online radio show host, and how to get people to keep coming back.

    6. Look for services and products that can be used in conjunction with online radio hosts - anything from plugins or modules for creating a station to the best newsletter options if they want to keep in touch with listeners, to reviewing or discussing recording equipment for the more professional online radio stations (and you could likely make some affiliate income with that).

    7. You could invite online radio stations to submit some info on a simple form, and you could post about them, announce new station launches, or review their shows (that's a neverending possibility in and of itself).

    8. You could talk about the legal and licensing issues related to playing others' music on internet radio stations.

    9. You could talk about things like Web hosts for people wanting to host their own shows.

    10. You could write posts targeting musicians, teaching them how to get their music played on Internet radio stations.

You could also create related resources attached to your blog that would give it more value to your readers, such as a directory of Internet radio stations, a page with a list of all (or as many as possible) online radio services and software programs, a list of equipment providers, a printable startup checklist, a custom calendar or planning sheet to help people plan out their radio shows / schedules, etc. There's a lot that you haven't done yet, so you definitely shouldn't be close to running out of ideas. ;)

Thanks for that very long post, jhmattern, I guess on my blog I've been focused a little too much on the technical side, as your point illustrates very well. I was thinking of offering $1 to every good suggestion for an article, I don't think I need to anymore.

I don't really know anything about the other internet services Live365 so I can't really go there I'm afraid.

Some of your suggestions, as I have also found with my own, are hard to make into lengthy articles, because they can be explained very simply. Does length really matter?

Not really... you're blogging, not creating a content site. Sure, longer can be better for some things. But there's nothing wrong with a short 200 word or so blog post here and there. Mix it up a bit, instead of worrying too much about length. Some things could be essentially effortless on your part - like the example I gave about profiling stations... just have them submit it via a form, copy/paste the info into a post, and voila... you have a profile to post.

As for not knowing other services well, don't worry about it. You'll learn as you go with it. Most of them will have a list of features on their sites, pricing info, etc. Just turn that into a brief informational post sharing details and exposing readers to new options. Once your blog is more popular, you shouldn't have much trouble getting review copies / access for things to actually review them. And in the meantime, you can always invite guest bloggers to talk about ones you don't know well (or even invite a company rep to discuss it in a blog post or interview someone there about it via email). Or just list the features and invite readers to leave their own reviews in the comments for now. :)

Why don't you write some off topic stuff. I have seen some blogs where the bloggers that use this technique are enjoying good results. But I have to mention in advance that they have an already established popularity among readers. I don't know whether this will work if you are a not so well known blogger.

Once in a while, an off topic post is okay. You can post your result from myheritage.com for example. To give your blog more personal touch and for your readers to know you more. Don't go purely technical stuff. Of course if you blog does not have a lot of readers then it's not much use.

Try to write about the broader niche.

I wouldn't go off topic unless you're established. As a new visitor, I'd be likely to think your blog is about whatever is on your mind and I'd leave.

I can't think of one topic where you'd be done writing in less than 1,000 articles. It's usually an issue of creativity.

Spend time looking at sites and publications that are about the topic or at least touch on it. You'll come up with ideas.

Get into the how-to, tips, top lists, etc. An expansion might be news. What is going on in the biz? Look for new software, deals, mergers, features, sites, publications and so forth.

Will bear everyones advice in mind but for now...

I have a set of things to do with my blog!

Check the two most recent entries, I have been busy programming tools for shoutcast, I've made them redistributable, in return for a backlink.

    I hope this works out.

Hm, blog writers experience exactly the same worries from time to time, so I am not very sure hiring a writer would solve the general problem. To me writing an offtopic post once in a while improves blogs, make them look more natural, enhances the overall blog presence.

All the posts on my blog are written by me and I'd preffer it to stay that way, also, as Tiggi said, you will find few people with more knowledge of shoutcast than me who are content writers :D

    Nice name, btw. :)

Look over what you have already written for things you mentioned almost as an aside while focusing on something else. Those things can become topics. Also, almost any topic can be addressed again with a demographic twist. Age, location, tall people, redheads, whatever.

If you get comments, mine them for ideas. And of course, check out what the competition is doing.
