Does commenting on blogs that is not relevant to your site helpful? Even if the the blogs are high ranking blog sites?
Sometimes it helps but not too much.If it is not relevant to your site, then it does not helps in getting backlinks and traffic. The blog's owner will come to know that you are doing only just to increase the ranking for your site.
It is kept under low category backlink category. It is no doubt valueable, if the blog where you get link from, is good, relevant and do follow.
If you make sure that you're providing value to the owner of the blog, they won't mind you dropping a link in there. Of course, providing value means actually reading their post and also detailing a positive response and what you thought about it. Also, try to stick to only relevant blogs, and forget the no-follow thing, as you can still obtain web signals from your comments anyway.
It would be helpful if it a do-follow site and it's even worth when you got your link with your keyword as a anchor. But probably most administrators doesn't allow this.
It depends on how relevant your comments are. When you comment on a blog, you've to provide your comments about that blog. It shouldn't just be like you insert your link in it.

Google does not gives priority to those backlinks which are not relevant to your website. But this can increase your website traffic. try to find relevant blogs and start commenting.
If you want good result then relevancy is most important this will increase traffic and also get backlink, it is more useful when blog is dofollow.
If you use blog commenting in higher pr and relevant site than it is help full your ranking and traffic.
Yes it does help - because its gives a feeling that your site is not only linked from the niche but from all over the web - that is liked by google - if you just link from the niche blogs related to your content - google smells something weird happening... hope this helps...
Sure it does give benefits. Sometimes if you can observe your traffic analytics, you can see that your blog comment link to the commentor's website do lead some visitors and if the blog enabled a do follow plugin, it will also give you relevant backlinks.
It depends on what you want to do. If you've an ecommerce portal for a particular niche you might not be able to make any sale commenting on irrelevant blogs. But if you're just looking to increase your rank, commenting on irrelevant dofollow blogs might be of some help to you.
I consider the one that requires approval is a high quality backlink. Relevancy is good but you can't ignore the one that are not relevant as well. Sometimes it's even hard to define the meaning of relevant site.
Blog commenting is the useful way to get some good backlinks if they are done in a proper way. A valuable answer towards the post can be the best comment of the blog, depends upon the blog, if its relevant then very much beneficial and if not then its not too bad to leave your link as an anchor link towards the high PR and Dofollow blog for getting some profit.
