Personally for long term business I would focus on quality as opposed to the medium. As the prevalence of comment/profile spam increase, google will continue to decrease the boost such backlinks give you. Context links within a forum post would be more difficult to spam and thus less likely to devaluate. If you're looking for traffic, try to snatch up links from sites that are already ranking for your niche.

I think forum posting is more effective than blog commenting

blog commenting is difficult than forum commenting, but as I understand its more valuable, but you need to select carefully high PR blogs. At last its better to do both, not only just blog commenting.

You can do forum posting or blog commenting and you will increase your website ranking, but to achieve good results in really competitive niches you will need both types of backlinsk. Because Google likes diversity.

I heard some place over internet that
    directory submission carries 1 mark,
    forum posting carries 2 marks
while blog commenting carries 4 marks.

Well for me the best thing that worked was article submissions that gave me instant traffic and boost to search engines.

    Your daily SEO routine:

    - Write one blog every day (one hour)

    - Content syndication/Blog commenting (one hour)

    - Forum posting - (one hour)

    That's it! You are done!

There are generally hundreds of blogs emerges each day on a similar topic than the number of active forum posts. So comparatively, blog commenting can be a better way to start with.

Both are best tactics used by most of SEO's, what the difference is Blog commenting give you the results some what earlier than Forum commenting, blog commenting give you the most back links from different blogs where forum give you a good quality back links from same site so it's up to your choice which is suites you.

I think very few high PR blogs allow do-follow comments. And learn the purpose of the blog commenting and forum posting.

Forum posting = Traffic (main) + Backlinks (supplementary)

Blog Commenting = Backlinks (main) + Traffic (supplementary)
