    If I find a blog thats got 3 or 4 links going to the blog owners site, is there much point in me linking to my site because doesn't google disregard the links further down the page?

    Sort of. A link thats in the middle of content gets more weight than a link in the footer but any link is worth getting. Doesn't matter how far down the page it is!
