Hi, I've never done the blog commenting for the SEO purpose and I'd like to get some basic knowledge. Does blog commenting help to improve the SERP? What is most proper way to do blog commenting? How do I find the blogs to comment?
    Thanks in advance!

Hey Listen, IF blog have no follow tag for comments then even u do commenting will not work, Basic reason of commenting is to get link or get relevant traffic by posting on relevant blogs . So I feel look both

Yes, blog commenting is very useful. It give backlink and also a traffic to your site or blog.

Always comment on the relevant blog so it gives targetted traffic and while doing blog commenting use appropriate anchore text and always read the instructions because some time they did not allow to use keywords in the name and ban your comment

Most blogs use the "nofollow" attribute in comments, so blog comments are usually useless for SEO.

You'll find a lot of blogs don't, also a nofollow backlink is still a back link, blog comments drive small traffic and help you build back links, so yes, they are great. :)

you have to check first before ..
    commenting...
that blog is do follow or not....
you have to check it particularly for each and every blog...
    just check its relevancy

If you can let me know about the niche you are looking for then i can surely search if i have any do-follow blog for that niche.

To find whether a blog is do-follow or no-follow you can install a toolbar which is Quirk Search which will highlight the no-follow links. :D

Blog commenting on followed blogs is benefitial from an SEO perspective if you use your targeted keyword phrases as your name/username for the comment (as this typically is the link text used to point back to the URL you enter w/ the comment). Nofollow blogs provide NO SEO benefit at Google. But some other engines may count it as a backlink. It is rumored the Yahoo! actually counts them. Nofollow links are not even included in Google's Citation or Link Graph. So it's not counted as a backlink from a PR perspect. The PR that would have gone out on that link is now thown away... You don't get credit for the link text... It doesn't help you rank at all at Google. Nofollow links from an authoritative site like wikipedia.com do not help your organic rankings at Google. Why anyone thinks they help when they are coming from some no name blog is beyond me.

On the flip side... nofollow blog commenting CAN be a nice source of targeted traffic IF you comment on blogs relevant to the topic of your site.

If you're done with other methods for building links, then go for blog commenting. It's not the best method but you cannot ignore it.

Blog commenting could be considered as a complimentary stage not to get neglected in the SEO packages you would be using. For example, buying quality directory links, articles, social bookmarking, forums, offering free tolls for the links and then blog comments.

Use the firfox nonofollow addon to check dofollow - once installed, righclick mouse and select nonofollow - dofollow links appear with blud background nofollow with a red background. It's saved me masses of time.

These days, even worse, many blog owner would tag your comments as spam, thus, your site would be banned for further comments, especially with wordpress. So, be cautious to do blog comments though it might help you in some extent. :)
