The goal of blog commenting shouldn't be just to get the link. I think that's where a lot of DIY SEO site owners run into trouble. They get so focused on getting the link they don't bother with anything else. Yes, getting the link is a good byproduct, but you should also be trying to interact with the blog owner and other readers. A great comment can really start a discussion and even send people over to your site.
