Old post, but decided to give my opinions on this...

    - Blogs are updated more often than some sites. updated more often, crawled more often. And you can use it as a tool to point to other sites you have to get crawled over faster.

    - Content and more and more content, as it grows, the more opportunities you get to write about various terms you wish to rank for.

    - More and more page, more and more internal linking.

    - More link bait opportunities, viral stories.

    - And just like what DSB mentioned, pinging all the blog search engines. Here is a long ping list you can ping when you blog:

Blogs help with traffic in two areas, Firstly as you add new content that is orintated around your subject this gets indexed by the search engines and generate visitors.

Secondly through registering the blog with the major RSS readers your content gets forund through sites like delicious, digg and stumbleupon which in turn generates visitors and links from other blogs.

It's a long term process but over time and as more and more content gets added you should notice a differnce in traffic figures.

I like blogs a lot and always prefer linking to blogs instead of other websites because they are updated often, which means new backlinks :)

Do you mean what topic of an article that you must create in your blog?

If your site is an ecommerce site then you have to create an article that is related to your products. Anyway what are your products? So I can give suggestion.

Thanks for your reply. I sell Network and PC cables. Ethernet, USB, Fiber Optic, HDMI, DVI, etc., etc. Also sell networking tools and accessories. Over 3,800 products, in fact.

I am not really up on blogs, so any help would be great. For example, would I run the blog on our ecommerce site, or run it on another domain and just point to our ecommerce site? Topics are pretty easy, I believe. For example what I have in my one squidoo lens (see link below) would likely be the sort of topic appropriate for a cable blog, I believe. But, I am open to all suggestions. Thanks.

Blog can rank well in search engine because it is full of text content. And if your site has good content many visitors will visit your site.

Okay, so it is a content thing. I guess the reason why people are using blogs is because it is very easy to post and update content versus doing it on a web page? Or is there other advantages to using a blog for seo?

You can create an article about importance of your products.
Select on one of your product and write its importance or you can write a trivia about your products.

I hope my post can help you.

    Create your main monetised site.

Then create a blog. From the blog, talk about your main site with lots of links to the main site with your keywords as the anchor text. Voila. Good, relevant links.

I am trying to setup an informal netork for this purpose:
