Blocking IP Address from RUSSIA and Overseas.

Discussion in 'HTML & Website Design' started by microtekblue, Feb 10, 2008.

    I have a forum site, where I keep getting these damn bot signing up and activating and posting their porn links.

    Most of them are coming from overseas IP addresses and mainly RUSSIA.

    Is there a way to totally and completely bock IP address that are coming from a certain country?

    Is there a way to block all Russian based IP addresses in particular?

    Anyone know of how this might work?

    Thanks.

    So then if a bunch of bots come from a country where you also have humans signing up-- then what? Better to stop bots from signing up in the first place. Make them answer a question first-- describe this image, answer this question anyone with a brain can answer, whatever. Then send them an email where they have to activate their account. It's not that much work for a human (just be careful with CAPCHA cause a lot of them aren't even human-readable).

    Actually my forum site has the captca etc...but these bots are now able to read that AND activate by confirming the email.

    I want to totally block all of the Russian bots atleast and any other crazy foreign bots.

    Try visting: http://www.blockacountry.com and it can generate a .htaccess file for you with the ip's of Russia or any other country you want blocked from your site.

    You know the site http://www.blockacountry.com

    It gives you a ready .htaccess code to use.

    Anyone know of a site that has ALL the correct ip ranges and gives you a usable .htaccess file?

    Thanks!

    With a very basis knowledge you will be able to use ip ranges for your .htaccess files.
    SO it is

    <Limit GET HEAD POST>
    order allow,deny
    deny from  ipaddressranges1
    deny from   ipaddressranges2
    deny from  ipaddressranges3
    allow from all
    </LIMIT>

    Code (markup):
    Simple put CIDR addresses lines instead of ipaddressranges1, ipaddressranges2 etc....

    I managed to organize and create a list for RUSSIA...but then it doesnt work ..and I use the code above as you mentioned.

    I have other things in my htaccess file too....is there some proper place or way to put it? I just put it under the rest of the stuff i have there...

    I end up getting a 500 server error...

    Ok I fixed the prob....if anyone is interested..it was due to the fact I was using CIDR and not ip ranges.

    Once I changed to ipranges it was fixed.

    Yea, no Russians can enter...and Netherlands is next lol...and then China.

    No offense to them or anything, but most of these bots are coming from Russian Federation, Netherlands, and China.

    And my particular site is only meant for Canadians.

    Oh yeah... they beautiful Xrumer... works wonders I tell you! Add a better captcha like "if i have 2 apples and take 1 away and buy 4 more apples how many do I have?" Xrumer can bypass the letters/numbers captchas. It's a great program.

    .and Netherlands is next lol...

    Well, guess I'll never go to your site. You just keep blocking countries until nobody can visit it. Seriously, how friggin hard is it to ask a friggin robot whether fire is hot or cold? THEY DON'T KNOW THE ANSWER TO THAT. If they do, your spammers AREN'T ROBOTS. They're humans getting paid to spam. You cannot stop humans. Humans also live in North America. Guess what? They too can be paid to spam your site. Guess you'll just have to shut it down.
