Block ips is the best way to stop spam?

Directories owners will all receive spam submission in our directories, verity code may be most of us will try but spam will not stop. So blocking their ips is the best way? if so, should we make a blacklist for that?

What do you think is the best way to stop it?

Use a good directory script. It becomes very managable with their existing ban features.

You can use image verification (called captcha), but there are scripts out there that can get past it.

I've seen sites use a simple math problem as verification like this: enter the sum of five plus two.

IP bans are useless... spammers change their IP's like they change there underwear.

IP banning does work - In one of my blogs, whenever anyone spams it, the class c they are coming from is automaticaly banned.

To start with, I was banning up to 10 address ranges a day, but now, it is down to 1 every few days. By adoptingthis approach, the spammers themselves are doing the hard work of creating a real-time blackhole list for you!

I agree that you need a decent script or be able to customise it for your needs.

Though IP bannning is good ,I think image verification will solve the problem to a certain extent

Well it takes work to ban ips.. whereas a good verification field is a one time work thing.

Verification sometimes would stop normal submission. I got the problem, when I submit my site to other directories, the verification code was always show invalid and I have to give it up.

Turn it to be a paid directory would be a good way as I see.
I never try to submit to these kind of directories except they are outstanding ones.

Sounds like you could end up banning legitimate users. Be careful ;)

I have tried that before but I got many submissions without payment, which I think most paid directories would got.

The code is so hard to identify that it stops some normal submission. People would consider that if the code easy to figure out, it will not make any sense but if it is too complex some normals will not be stopped.

They are true spammers, why?! cause i received the exact same submissions from those IPs on my paid directories and free ones, same category, same description yada.... They use a submission software...

Do you guys think those IPs are from proxies? How can they change Ips that fast?

It has nothing to do with that,eh?
If you own a paid directory and someone submits a site without paying the fee, wouldn't you delete it?
