Have you heard of the new site Google have launched? If Google had a black screen, taking in account the huge number of page views, according to calculations, 750 mega watts/hour per year would be saved. In response Google created a black version of its search engine, called Blackle, with the exact same functions as the white version, but obviously with lower energy consumption! Excellent, spread the word!
Yup I've heard. It's a good concept. . . but it's so depressing. Amazing how much energy they claim to have saved. Skinny
It's funny how simple idea's can create such a buzz. How long would that site take someone to make, under 5 minutes?
I have to say, it might do the opposite. I couldn't read anything fast, so I would be on the pages longer trying to read everything. Also the logo should have been a gif and smaller to speed up the loading on the logo so less energy is wasted. And I just took a look at the code, its using the Google Custom Search Engine software that Google provide for website owners to use on their sites. Good idea, but.....IDK
Saving energy is good, but that black site really is depressing. The white background with the colorful "google" logo is much more eye appealing...I'm sure that people who suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder would completely agree.
It is hard to read the white writing against the black background. I wonder if Google will protest against this?
Why would Google protest against it? This website uses code which is publicly provided by them, and everyone can tweak it according to their preferences. Saving energy is right thing, although I'm not sure how true those numbers are. Saving energy you'd probably damage your sight.
It's a very cool idea. I've saw that idea posted before and I'm not sure if that's the original site. Cool though
I highly doubt a black background saves energy over a white background. I would like to see the actual research and evidence to back that up. Good marketing ploy though.
It would be interesting to know how they worked the figures out? Tis true though, I struggled to read the white on black. Tell you what though, if more people turned their monitors off at the end of the day, that would help too!
Correct me if i'm wrong, but a backlit lcd monitor lights the black pixels as well so I don't see how this would save any energy. it sounds like a gimmick. Also note that google is mostly powered by solar energy now after their large scale project they just finished.
