If you ask this question on a black hat forum, you will probably get the opposite answers. Never use black hat! We should be encouraging you, as its less competition for us.

You can cheat the search engines, but you are looking at short span gains. I would never do it.

It depends on exactly what you are planning to do. I doubt if you have exhausted all of your non-frowned-upon options. Still, there is a difference between being edgy and stupid when it comes to what you try.

Guys you are overly paranoid IMHO
I mean common? Everybody and their mother are doing blackhat SEO nowadays. And blackhat SEO =/= penalization. You only hear people bitching about blackhat SEO when it doesn't work, when done right there is no difference in the longevity of the results.
It all depends on how you use it. Spam your site full and of course you'll get banned. But you can also do it the right way.
Consider this: Why not establish some channels or proxies to your client's site. Set up a couple of sites linking back to your client's site. Web 2.0 properties (use senuke) or whatever. Then blasts those sites with xrumer or scrape box. Do this, then wait 1-2 days and repeat again. Your client's site will stay absolutely safe since you are channelling all the link juice through your "proxy" sites.
    Hope this makes sense.

Another thing, if you do decide to do this, do not create link wheels since this will red flags with google. Rather then full blown link wheels, mix it up a bit with direct or second level linking. Do one round of this, interlink on second level, create a new set of sites and interlink them with your previous set of websites. Blast them all with xrumer and scrapebox and repeat the process without interlinking.
I guarantee your client's website will stay absolutely safe.

I'm not, and none of the SEOs I know are, either. It's dishonest, it can cost you a job/contract/client, and the results won't last forever. I can't think of a better reason not to bother with it.

I believe blackhat SEO has many different levels.
Don't see why it would be dishonest if you stay honest with your client, explaining him/her what it actually is that you are about to do. Who is it dishonest to? I don't see a problem with it if you guarantee safety to your client, which you can do and should do. Of course I'm against over-spamming the site or risking the sites rankings through a shady technique. Again, not all blackhat SEO is equal.
You certainly shouldn't do it if you have no clue about it.

Whatever we do against the guideline of search engines comes under Black Hat SEO. These are illegal techniques used in SEO.
