It's not worth it, as priyakochin said you will get banned and it will be a complete waste of time and money. Do it real with genuine content.

come to that, what is white hat?

I was hoping this thread would be more specific about what black hat meant -what illegal methods are we talking about? email spamming and spamming forums? or are there others?

Is white hat only emailing to parties who've shown interest, giving them opt out and never mentioning relevant websites even if they're in context anywhere?

Is there such a thing as grey hat?

There's nothing illegal about it lol

It's a way of reaching your goal using methods that are not right - like spamming or using link farms.

You will get found out by the "big G" and then you will be screwed :D

Black Hat = Spaming. Its the shortcut/illigul way to achieve the target.

Please choose only White Hat...Because your site might get ban by SE if you will use Black Hat technique.

    thanks

There's nothing "illegal" about it, but it is highly inethical.

Think of it this way (as others have mentioned). Using techniques such as link farming, cloaking content for the sole purpose of gaming the search engines (CSS based image substitution techniques and dropdown menus do not count, since the people visiting the site can still view the default content if the techniques are implemented properly) and the like are considered "black hat" so the definition you are seeking is placing content on your site that only the search engines will see (but not you or I) for the sole purpose of ranking well in the search engine results pages.

Google has no laws .. only guidelines. If you break them, the worst that can happen is your site gets banned by G .. in that case build another.

There is nothing illegal about it unless you spam to email (which carries a charge in most places). But I don't think spamming is considered BH.

Yes, most BH sites have a short lifespan, but the dev's understand that before they build it.

True, black hats don't necessarily need to be illegal. They are considered as bad and unethical, and will be found and punished eventually.

Black Hat methods don't have to be illegal. Breaking google's, Myspace's, or whatever sites ToS is NOT illegal. Companies can't make laws, only guidelines. Breaking these guidelines results in nothing, but possibly the termination of your account or relationship with the company. Some people seem to think that companies somehow create laws. Of course not, only the government can do that. Although, there is always the risk of being sued and taken to civil court, but this does not make you a criminal or a law breaker.

I'm not promoting or saying that using Black Hat methods is ethical, but clearing up some common misconceptions that people have.

this is an old technique, and it seriously will not work at all, that's why i'm posting it.

let's say you have a website, and the background is white.
well if you stuff a whole bunch of white keywords in that background it will be cloaked to the general public, but visible to the search engines.

    I repeat:
this one doesn't work anymore, as google pounces on this, and your site will immediately be penalized.

but it's just an example of old school black hat :]
