Why did they change? I bet they were waiting for that domain to open up. I HATED typing in bit DOT ly. What the heck is ly anyway?
I just checked it and its working fine plus I use it on 200 links a day with no outages. My guess is they put up a backup domain just in case Libya collapses into chaos.
When Twitter had enhanced for shortening URLs, I haven't visited bit.ly anymore. Thanks for the information. That is helpful to us as marketers.
I really don't know why they did this though? Is it because the .com is a TLD? I mean, bit.ly is shorter than bitly.com and I kinda like bit.ly more. =(
