Good day DP members! I need to know what are the biggest differences between a free bsd and a linux server when it comes to running websites ? One thing i have heard of is that linux server is not optimal when hosting streaming videos. What more things is there to know ?
It depends on what apps do you use i think, it can has better performance if it's well built (anyways the most stable and best performance system is solaris) check this http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/articles/explaining-bsd/comparing-bsd-and-linux.html
xBSDs have a good reputation for being stable and secure and were considered to have a superior networking stack and better process handling than Linux. However, a lot of R&D has gone into Linux to take care of these issues and it has at least matched, if not surpassed its BSD cousins in most of these areas. Other factors you should consider are software support, availability of technical expertise and hosting options. Linux is dominant in these areas so I'd recommend that you only go with something else if you have a team and resources capable of handling it.
