Big Keyword for a Little Site

Guys and gals, I need some level headed thinking. My plan is basic, I need my site http://www.milpages.com to rank for "military news" and even bolder "military". Am I crazy to think this is possible? I know it's a lot of high quality links and article submissions, and everything under the sun...but can it be done? How would you go about it?

I know I could focus on minor keywords, but my overall goal is to go big or go home. I am hoping someone here might be able to guide me a little further so I can start planning a solid strategy. Thanks

    Adam

Hi adamx8, first of all i will say that everything is possible, you always need courage and a solid plan to accomplish tasks and get desired outputs. your website looks like a military news website and military community website. As per my experience i will say that news sites only have competition around "news", i mean who breaks it first with great content, wins. I have just checked that keyword "military news" has "About 319,000 results" in title, which means that a lot of people are already doing this "military news" stuff. But still you can also do it by breaking news at first, get relations and news feeds from trusted resources so that you are able to publish authentic stories.
Moreover you can narrow down the idea and can cover navy or air force news alone , instead of going for a big keyword " military news". The benefit of going after these navy news and air force news kind of keywords is that you still have a chance to rank for military news if you do it the right way.

Thanks rankexperts. I appreciate the reply. I can go in little pieces but of course the bigger goal is to plan correctly how to get placed for the big term "military" in the end. That is like climbing Mt. Everest to me I guess. I am trying to increase traffic with 2 new articles a day but I hope to go further and get real placement down the line for competitive keywords.

Yes indeed it will take sometime to get traffic from the huge keyword" military news". Yes, you should update the content in more innovative way to get more people read your news articles and stories. I would like to suggest you the idea of press release submission of every hot and crazy news about military. Do high quality and genuine press release submission, this could widen the overall spectrum of your website.

Focus on all related keywords which are included with your targeted keyword. Make a blog for your website, write article and unique content use internal hyperlinking, do links building with anchor tag of your targeted keyword. It would helps a lot to get ranking with in short time.

All other major factors also there. You should follow along with them.

    Any suggestion please paste here.

    Thank you

If I mean to get rank number 1 for this keyword, the first thing I’ll do I’ll change the domain name to a domain contains those words

I wouldn't do that as then you'll be starting over. Start with the end in mind.

Thinking of ranking number one means not to let any advantage for my competitors over me, domain name is one of the important factors and I will take this advantage over them.

Two new articles on your website? Or two new articles submitted somewhere else?

Gonna be a long uphill battle buddy. You're gonna need a ton of high quality links, lots of fresh content, and its gonna take months if not years. Best way to go about it is tackle long tails for awhile, once you start ranking for those then go after your bigger KWs.

You have to put insane lot of work to get yourself ranked higher against these kyewords, because most probably your competitor would be Government sites (.gov) related to Military or similar thing, that is extremely hard to beat on search engine ranking. However if you use other sources to full traffic like social media, article marketing or press releases, you can still have fair traffic. But i wont recommend you to use such keywords, you'll be lost like a pin in sand :)
