Big brands with no competitors bidding on them

I'm working for a niche tour operator and our brand name and domain are always plagued with competitors bidding on them. I don't understand why big brands like Thomas Cook and First Choice don't have a single competitor exploiting their brand searches. I have already complained with Google but all they can do is to prevent the brand name from appearing in the ad. So what the big brands are doing to preventing competitors from bidding on their brand names and domains?

Other brands protect their brand in AdWords by bidding on their own brands. Have you tried this?
