That's exactly what happens to me too! It's so hard to explain people (especially old folks) how I make money online. So people are just so reluctant to understand that they just smile at you. I never disclose my earnings to them though. I would probably calmed them down. But, this is America, everyone is for himself. No sharing.

I do not see a problem with telling people about the possibilities of Adsense and or helping them optimize their ads. But as we all well know adsense is nothing without traffic and a quality site which are the fields I will not always help people out in, especially if they are starting a site in my niche

    Two points here:

    1) I can't say I agree with Will's choice for choosing friends based on their IQ.

    2) Plenty unintelligient but creative people make big money on the internet everyday.

I don't think that's a conscious decision he takes, he just happens to affiliate with Hi-IQ people, probably like himself. It's only natural that you tend to choose friends (even by accident) because you share a common interest or IQ, in this case.

I share it with my wife and my best friend. But both know they are never to click on my ads, in fact I pretty much never give them my URL, just show them my stats and tell them what I am doing.

No one has ever really asked me for specific advice but I volunteer here and there on various forums. On V7n there seems to be an anti-Adsense movement so I take a stand there when people say that selling a few text links is better than doing Adsense and other stuff that might be true for them but generally is untrue.

hmm seems an ongoing argument for and against adsense, I like to advise people but people always think wheres the catch how can you make money from people clicking.

i used to make 1 dollar a week if I was lucky, literally a month ago now its a round 4 dollars a day from only 4 clicks generally. Can't wait till traffic maximises.

but I like helping and advising you get what you give

My experience has been that most people are so inculcated with the "trading time for money" (j.o.b) syndrome that a residual income like adsense is incomprehensible to them. Even if you take the time to explain, they usually don't understand or don't care.

I tell anyone that is interested, the conversation usually goes like this.

What do you do for a living?
    I am developing a website.
Oh, really? What do you sell?
    I sell advertising.
Oh... so you solicit companies to advertise on your site?
    Actually... no... etc. etc.

So the bottom line is, like most other posts, no one I've ever told about it has ever done anything themselves. The current "job" paradigm keeps them from thinking out of the box enough to invest in a residual type income rather than working for somebody else in a "trading time for money" type income.

drjungle, what can I say? You're absolutely right. It's really suprising to me how many people in my economics class even consider starting a business themselves.

Or maybe it's just me having read too many books about wealth. We'll find out in the next couple decades.

There are a lot of people who take a part time job after their fulltime job so adsense can be considered a part time job

i do tell my friends and family, its kinda hard to explain where money is coming from when most of your day i spend in front of laptop and cheques and transfers occur regulary.

i found i can get alot of business customers by referals from friends

adsense is not the main income tho (2-3k month), there are other ways to make money online,
for example consulting is very lucrative, as you can charge whatever you want ;) for good advice and people will pay it if they are really stuck

also SEOing and hosting is very profitable, some companies just throw money around like theres no tomorow

aquiring and managing linux servers brings in a fair bit as well, not many people like to get their hands dirty with linux, but its reliable and i manage dozens of servers, most of them with 0 downtime in last 10months

unfortunately here in "RIP OF IRELAND" everything is expensive, and your money doesnt go far, all i require for work is in an internet connection so i might be moving to a sunnier place :)

I've got a web design buddy who I told about AdSense. The problem is, as Will explained politely, is that the person needs to be more than just a web designer, they need to be able to grasp the concept of the ads and concepts. This is what I believe is the difficult part for anyone, no matter what their IQ.

If they have a hard time grasping it, or they don't understand why they aren't making the $$, you may be stuck helping them more than you want to.

I've learned to be very selective about who I tell. Most people just think I 'make money online' but they don't have a clue how it happens.

And I like it that way :)

If I were only making $1 a day, I would share because I would hope someone would make suggestions for how to do better, and I would want to know that other people share my misery ("misery loves company").

If I were making $100 a day, I might share to help newbies understand that making a good revenue is possible and to encourage them to keep trying.

If I were making $1000 a day, I wouldn't share because it seems like in-your-face bragging that serves no purpose other than to make others envious.
