Have you guys seen bid4myjunk.com? Do you think their idea of a free auction listing will beat out eBay's idea of ripping everybody off with high fees?

If they get any kind of business and turn into a main stream site eBay will just buy them out. eBay wont sit and watch another site try and compete with them if they can control it.

Haha, that is a good point, but what if Google buys then and competes with eBay. It seems like Google buys everything nowadays... :)

Thats true.. but both companies buy anything that has any sort of long term value. All depends on who notices it and offers the most money. Lots of auction sites try to come out and compete with eBay but just never get the much support. Although some have made it most fail. Simply offering free auctions probably wont make it that successful but thats just my opinion.

Auction sites depends on both seller and buyer, if there's not much sellers, people wouldn't browse because there's not much stuff to search for. If people couldn't sell... then there would be less sellers, and less buyers consequently.

That's why most auction sites are out of business. They need an activity spark or something to rise their traffic tremendously.

ePier.com also offers free listings and while it's been around for awhile, just doesn't get the traffic. I've sold a few things on their but it doesn't compare to eBay.

If any auction site wants to even have the chance of competing with eBay they are going to have to come out with the newest and best thing that hooks customers in but thats hard seeing as how your whole site basically is based on something already so popular.

I wish this new site would worry Ebay, but I doubt it! It's a shame, Ebay used to be great, but it seems to be squeezing the life out of it's own market with their ever increasing and changing fees structure.

ebay has massive traffic, so i would think that it would be nearly impossible to challenge it, even with free listings.

I never heard about ePier, but I am going to give them a try as well as Bid4MyJunk. We'll see if they really are better than eBay.

eBay is just to big. It's almost impossible to compete with something like eBay...and if you somehow do..they will simply buy you :p

Not everything can be bought. Ebay tried to buy out craigslist, but owner of craigslist refused to let the site be taken over and turned into a marketing website.

Thats very true. I think that if I owned something that eBay wanted to buy I would want to refuse it just for the pure joy of knowing that eBay is worried about what I created. Also the long term profit from keeping it for my self. Long term gain.

I think it would be tempting selling a site like craigslist to ebay though. Does anyone know how much they offered?

I think it could work, but it's going to be very difficult to dethrone ebay. Even if they do blow nowadays.
