Bid directories and their content The newest "child" of the web directory is the bid directory. The ranking in the bid directory is directly proportional to the contribution by the submitter. Where does this new ranking method lead? I think that is not surprising that a considerable part - it is possible that the main part - of bid directories have gambling links in their top 10, which is listed on their home pages. This is happening because of the following reasons: 1. for the web masters of gambling web sites is a challenge to find quality external links, so they are interested in buying almost any link that can be bought, so they love the permissive bid directories, 2. the biggest part of the bid directory owners are interested in immediate profit, so they list gambling sites without being interested in the quality of their directories' content. Having these links and, in consequence, concluding that their content is not family-friendly, the question is: what is the role of the bid directories in the general economy of the internet? They fail in being a family-friendly resource center, so they fail in being trustworthy and high quality resources. There is a fact. Most of the bid directories which are listing links to gambling site won't have long life as they will never earn credibility, respect and honourable reputation.
as a directory owner, welcome any gambling sites submit to my bidding directory. it's a business! if you get hundreds of bidding form gambling sites one day, please refund the money and let us know.
Apart from all that, webmaster will just create a new directory when things start to dry up... so whats wrong with that, noting I reckon, its just business. I do run a bid directory myself, however there is one thing thats annoying, other's claim your link is permanent, how can they make such a statement, ever hear the expression, "here today gone tomorrow".
Let me tell you something. If you take a look at the directories which has a solid reputation, such as Alive & Aviva, you'll see that they has no categories for gambling links... For a long-term & successful run solid reputation is needed and gambling links doesn't help in achieving it...
Who say..? http://www.alivedirectory.com/Entertainment/Gambling/ http://www.avivadirectory.com/Recreation/Games/Games/
..and these are bidding directories examples anyway these days nobody makes any big money from any kind of directory, so you gotta take what you can
Even so, at least they are not listed on the homepage... My will is to have family-friendly sites. I am the only one with this will?
if you care about Alive and Aviva, how about their partner, bigweblinks, the second highest bidding came from Online Casinos. what's wrong about gambling sites?
I admire your procreational idea, but I doubt it will make you stand out from the rest(no offense intended), its not really the directories own fault what appears on the home page, its up to the individual owners terms and conditions, if any other genre was making as much a gambling sites are they too would be availing of bid directories. Its not just because its a challenge to find quality external links, its because bid directory owners will promote there sites, lets say in more profitable fashion then a free directory owner would.
Family Freindly ?, lets see, i wont send my kids to school because other kids swear, have bad habbits are rude. Never let them watch the news, current affair programs even disney movies ( elmo fudd runs around with a shot gun shooting wildlife ), bugger it no TV at all. I would ban them from listening to the radio, they promte / advertise night clubs, racing events and all other unfreindly things, Same goes with a news paper, classified run ads for call girls, hell i cant even show them the phone book for that reason. Best i just lock them in their room for life unaware there is even a world outside of those 4 walls.
I chose to not list casino sites and rejected all of them. You are right, casino webmasters love bid directories as they can get a homepage high PR link easily. Almost any other site refuses to accept casino links.
I have always rejected Gambling and casino links at harmu.com!! Though most of the sites that i have rejected were not even gambling sites, they were just resource/informational websites about poker/gambling/casinos! If a site is about casino news and information, it should not be that bad, from family-friendly point of view! still i won't accept those in my own directories. [Just my personal preference]
Depends on the directory - this is my latest links page and there's only 3 casino/gambline related links out of 10. Seems like a good proportion to me and hasn't dissuaded other advertisers...
Thank you, gentleman! Your posts proves that I am not the only one who believes in the need of a safe online environment.
On the homepage of your bid directory I see 4 casino links... Of course, it is your choice to accept them.
Respiro - personally I'd prefer that online casino sites weren't as popular as they are, but they obviously are one of the most profitable online business models. I decided to accept gambling "directories" on a bid for position directory of directories site and sure enough the gambling sites are the ones with the cash to spend. I've thought about limiting their maximum allowed bids and even refunding their money to "clean" up the listings, but without their business there simply isn't enough business to lead me to make that call. In addition, unless you continually police every site you accept into your directory then your site may very well be sending traffic to "Sinner" sites without you even being aware of it. For now I'm going to continue to be a capitalist and let the forces of supply and demand dictate who gets listed and in what position. Seems to go with a BIDDING directory.
Yes i do champ and they are probably older or at the age of most here now. Protecting children we all should share in a moral and in a real sense as adults all children from harm in any shape or form. For me ( personal view only ) our methods were not to hide our children from the nasties of the world ( nor did we poke it in thier face but a more natural discovery as they grew ) and in not hiding and adopting an open discussion between us and them we were able to explain why some thing was good or bad. This gave them understanding and allowed them to work the issues and the ways of the world as they grew. They are both near adult hood now with a good and sound footing to move forward. Back on this topic, I will say 100% i will be running an adult section in the upcoming ( to be released before the turn of the next mellenium ). And in that yes i do hold great concern for our kids and believe that it can be done in a way to minimise exposure, to do this i have set up a hidden section that requires a pass to gain access and no adult material will run in the general mainsteam directory to keep the little ones and mainstream happy, but for those who want it there will be the alternate option. This will however be clean adult with no porn, illegal sites distastful nudes or related material allowed but more in line with what is already in the public domain on tv radio papers and yellow pages type advertising. And to all of our best efforts, show me a half clued up kid who cant find xyz within 4 mouse clicks on a pc and I will be amazed.
The final frontier is the decision of each of us and, definitely, we all are free to proceed as we understand that we have to. Thank you for sharing your perspectives.
