It's the same as .com or .net. It doesn't affect rankings. https just means the info within a page will be encrypted.

If you use https:// you will not rank as high as the other variation.

Is this proven? Or just like those who say that with a higher PR you get higher SERP?

https:// protocol using secured sites like paypal, citibank and other online money transactions sites. https:// for normal site. I don't think there is any difference in the SEO point of view.

http:// This means that the website is talking to your browser using the regular 'unsecure' language. In other words, it is possible for someone to "eavesdrop" on your computer's conversation with the website. If you fill out a form on the website, someone might see the information you send to that site.

https:// that basically means your computer is talking to the website in a secure code that no one can eavesdrop on.

*cough* I have to call bullsh*t on that one... There is no difference in ranking of https vs. http pages. From an SEO perspective they are treated by the engines the same.

All https does is to ensure when data is tranfered from an https page in the browser across the web to the server or back that while the information being transmitted is "on the wire", it's encrypted so that people sniffing the web can't see what you're sending/receiving.

As said johngfcarey, https:// is a secured server. Generally, http:// crawls by the search engines. Sometimes, https:// also get index bcoz of the server configuration. So, it is good to restrict robot access to https:// to avoid duplicate content.

SSL - Secure Socket Layer. A means of securing a connection between a client and a web server using encryption at the transport layer

NON SSL - The connection between a client and a web server is not secured.

As from a SEO POV i would have to say http will definitly rank higher than HTTPS and if both are indexed they will contribute to dup content.
