Hi, I was hoping to get some opinions on something: I was wondering if it's better to put AdSense up immediately on a new content-driven site, or is it better to wait at least until the site gets indexed? Is there something in Google's algorithm that would flag a newly indexed site if it contained AdSense? I mean, with all the cracking down on the "Made for AdSense" sites and so on... what about this sandboxing stuff? Would a new site get a higher starting PR if it didn't contain AdSense? Also, any thoughts on whether it's better to hold off on the AdSense in general? (i.e. wait until you get a good user base and then put the ads up?) These may be very silly questions... forgive me, I'm still kinda new at this. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you very much, Michael
Michael... All good questions and I don't think any of us are 100% confident on the answer. I've always been an advocate of putting adsense on right away. As long as you don't truly have a "made for adsense" site and there is content no it - you should be fine. Just my opinion.
I put AdSense from day one. Search engines know that websites will carry advertising. After all, all the best (for profit) websites in the world carry a lot of advertising. Putting ads has no impact on SERPS. If your website is legitimate, there is nothing to worry. Just add content regularly and hope that people will naturally link to you. However, if you are running a shitty website, then don't blame search engines for treating you badly.
Adsence and serps are 2 different things and have a different bot to crawl the content... serps don't change because you have adsence or not... adsence presence will not get the page indexed faster, get a penalty... it does not change PR. I put them as soon as the site does not look in construction.
Some will say why not start monetising immediately, others would beg to differ. Their reasoning would be to build a sizeable traffic and then apply adsense. I guess both sides have a case and would depent partly on the type of site, niche, etc.
Wow, thank you all very much for the prompt and informative responses. Interestingly enough, I just read somewhere that adding adsense to a site helps it to get indexed faster. hmm... Another question along the same lines: in your personal experiences, does adsense on a new site hurt in terms of traffic, repeat visitors and growth? Thanks again, Michael
google ads aren't intrusive,so it wont turn people away. just dont use many of them and dont have them take away space from the site.
The only way you'll know for sure is do the test like I did, make a bimbo page, put it online and open with it so the media bot crawls it. Never put a link to it and wait for a year if you have the patience... feel free to visit the page once in a while to get it crawled by the media bot... but in a year it will still not be crawled by googlebot and will not be indexed.
I don't put them on initially because it's easier to get backlinks if your site doesn't appear to be monetized, adsense is the clearest market for that. As for whether it'll get indexed faster/slower, using google sitemaps is the quickest way to get in. If you do have adsense, it will get spidered more often because another bot (or two or ten) will hit your page.
I was greedy and threw Adsense in right from the beginning, and I dont think it affected my traffic or anything else.
Wow, this is my first thread here and I've gotta say - you guys are great! Thank you very much for all the great input. bargainr: you make a good point. I think I'm going to hold off on putting Adsense up on my site, at least for a little while. But it's still good to know that putting Adsense on there wont affect my indexing or serps in a negative way. Thanks again everyone. Cheers, Michael
I think ads blended into your new site won't hurt. However, I personally prefer to try to get some decent traffic to the site first. Maybe a few hundred visitors per day. Unless you have one of those markets that pays quite a bit per click, I would hold off until the site gets going.
I generally put ads on straight away. Sometimes i wait a few weeks. But i usually start with just one or 2 ad units in subtle places until I start getting increased traffic, then i will play around with different placements.
I put Adsense right from the first day and never had any problem with it. I don't think Google takes any of that into consideration to ban publishers.
It doesn't matter for Google if you put your adsense from day one. But here's where it does: 1. when you submit to directories (especially DMOZ) - there are a lot of adsense websites that do spam and because your website is new and has adsense on it, it also may be considered a spamming site by editors, at first sight 2. same is true when you are looking for link exchanges or finding partneres. There are a lot of chances that someone won't link to you because your site is new and has adsense The above are based on my experience and I don't recommend to put adsense from day 1 only if you really need those couple of dollars that you will get from adsense.
If adsense sites use those methods then are they not by definition built for adsense? I would think that if you manage you links and content and uinderstand your traffic levels you could avoid costly errors in the selection of link generation. If you see spikes in the amount of hits you are getting and can determine the reason it is my experience that telling Google about it is beneficial. This is esspecially true if they might suspect click fraud.
