Better to host a Blog on your own website? or use a service like blogger.com?

Discussion in 'WordPress' started by Davey Crocket, Jul 15, 2005.

I am new to Blogging and have a question.
I have a website that I would like to generate some traffic by using a blog.
Is it better to have my blog installed on my website such as ww.mywebsite.com/blog.php
or should I have one on a service like blogger?

    Thanks

Best to have it on your own site then you are in full control and can move hosts or content system if you so wanted

I second that. Host it yourself. More control and ultimately more choices.

I'd host it myself.....there are so many blogs out there..you have to stay out of the crowd!

Unlike most, Id say it depends.
If, like me, you're testing the water for a new idea/site then register the domain and point it to blogger. You can then get your site right and see if you will stick at it.

    Pros:
Domain is registered even if you decide not to continue going ahead (and can be used for email).
    Small expense, low risk

    Cons:
Not as powerfull as a blog hosted on your own server.
Might have to migrate content over

host on own website simple because you have more control over it, unless of course you have limited space/bandwidth then host it somewhere else.

Yep, agree with all above: Host it yourself (hosting & domain reg has never been cheaper) and use WordPress (it's free), which IMHO is the best blog software.

Host it with Blogger. If ranking fast and hard is your goal.

    Good point TOPS30!

If SE marketing is important to you, hosting it with blogger might be better by far.

Many SEOs use a blog to support sites and Blogger gives you a great opportunity for some healthy links.

I'd recommend hosting your own WordPress blog. Its the easiest blog software to setup and is extremely flexible. Plus the community is extremely helpful if you do run into problems.

I've tried blogger. You just can't do much with it.

I agree, host it on your own site if you can... if you are just starting out and want to take the path with the least risks... head to blogger!

Does anybody have experience with both serendipity and wordpress? Serendipity is an easy install, easily configurable.. but I'm not so sure I like it. Smarty templates aren't my idea of good form, call me crazy. Plus their CSS is dynamically generated, which makes formatting next to impossible out of the box. If I have to hack my blog software just to be able to modify CSS files.. something is wrong.

I hate smarty! And that's the beauty of wordpress...you can modify the whole look and feel by changing 1 CSS file...simple as that....

    Hello,

I just found this thread by googling because I'm trying to install WordPress onto my own website. I was wondering if anyone here could help me figure out how to do it? Basically, I want the blog to appear on the index.htm page. I have all the stuff downloaded and the blog set up. Actually, someone designed my site for me a while back, but now I want to completely redesign it. So, how do I actually make my blog appear? I can't tell what the other person did before. TIA for any help.

    ~Susie
