A friend of mine adviced me not to make too "complicated" web site with too many graphic elements but to try to make simple design with useful content for best results. How do you think ? Because my site Im working on now is poor of too many graphics themes or smth like this
chaos hit the nail right on the head. Go for a balance between simplicity and design. Sometimes you don't need a lot of graphics to have a killer design (look at www.problogger.net for a good example of what I mean), and other times it's necessary. Whatever you do though, make sure the content is still accessible and easy to read when the images are disabled yet the stylesheet still gets applied.
Try with design that best suits the nature of your site, some of the most popular web-sites such as google.com, ebay.com, craigslist.com have the simplest design on their forehand that does the purpose.
Using a simple web design which is proffesonal looking is always a great idea, as long as it isn't too simple. Basically don't add millions of little images that are not needed everywhere.
I agree with balance also. You need some graphical elements that are well placed on the page for a visual appeal. But content is key, not only for SEO, but to keep people interested.
Lets say, Less is More. We don't want to look at fancy designs but we don't want it very plain either. So, we opt for good color scheme and simple but professional graphics.
I like simple designs that look professional. I don't like a page to be so simple it doesn't even look nice. You need to find the balance and stick to it
It all depends on what you're trying to achieve with your website. If you're trying to sell your services as a graphic designer, a website with many graphic elements is natural. But only if it loads normally, or your customers will have left your site before they've even layed eyes on it.
