- External Links - for formatting external links
- No Self Pings - disables pinging to your own blog
- Raven's Antispam - the best anti spam protection I've ever seen - disallows posting comments from robots without any captcha
- Redirection - very useful plugin for redirecting from old post URLs to new URLs
- WP No Category Base - removes /category from the category URL
- Broken Link Checker - good for finding dead links and images
- Clean Options - removes options of deleted plugins from your database
- Google XML Sitemaps - creates XML sitemap
- Show Top Commentators - shows a list of top commentators
- Similar Posts - shows a list of similar posts
- Subscribe To Comments - allows readers to be notified by e-mail about new replies
- WP-Syntax - probably the best syntax highlighter
- WP Page Numbers - great plugin for displaying numbers of pages
- FeedBurner FeedSmith - redirects RSS feed to another URL
- @ Reply - allows linking to another comment with just one click
- W3 Total Cache - one of the best caching plugins

I also recommend Spammer Blocker for banning IP addresses of nasty spammers.

Another one I forgot to mention for people that are trying to create a paid membership site

s2Member plugin: it has some issues, but for being free it pretty awesome.

 

search term tagging - is one of the best plugin. it convert all incoming search terms into tags.

Push Button Cash Site and BackupBuddy. One is autoblogger and the other does backups and turnkey migrations. Both are commercial, but they're great. Good luck. Also like the Thesis 1.8 theme. $79.
