But even better than NotePad is emeditor.com
Its kind of like notepad on steroids. It has lots of features not suported by notepad.

Getting a book might be a good thing.
Or do as I did, learn (x)html/css by messing around with Dreamweaver and read tutorials on the internet.
I can't read books to learn, I just don't work like that.

Nowadays I don't use dreamweaver though, I code everything by hand, all from PHP to (x)HTML.

Btw, you said designing? You can't really "design" a website using notepad or dreamweaver..

Actually you can, it just requires a significantly different thought process and the use of wireframes to build the core of the template.

Granted, when it comes to graphics you're SOL without a graphics editor, but you can still get the core colors and positioning down.

Yeah, good for <censored>. The code it produces is so bloated and it also inserts their ads all over your Web site in the worst possible ways, forcing not just Internet Explorer but other browsers into quirks mode, which of course will break your site's layout six ways to Sunday before you even get out of bed in the morning.

As per your desire you are looking for good and free and easy to use website design software, it would be possible with the help of Drupaland joomla websites.

    Thankyou:)

They're not Web design software, they're content management systems. Rather complex ones (from a "I'm new to Web design" standpoint) too.

Codeview in Dreamweaver is way better than notepad in my opinion. You can still handcode as you would with notepad but the autocomplete and formatting shortcuts can help speed the whole process up. DONT use the design view for editing though otherwise it'll put some crappy code in for you! :D

Which is like comparing apples to oranges, in my opinion. It all depends on a person's needs and their coding style, really (by the way, I prefer apples - as in the kind you eat).

This software at suggested myfreewebsitebuilder.com looks pretty much the same as nvu HTML editor which is a free package again. The only extra thing you get with myfreewebsitebuilder.com is it has self promoting ads and/or tabs. lol...

Start with NVU (or better KOMPOZER) at the beginning.
HMTLKIT is useful only after some time

I agree with you on this on this one. I'm personally using Notepad ++ and I have absoultely loved it so far, the the use of colored syntax and tabs, its great stuff.

Yes, I've made a ton of mistakes, thus far, but I've also learned a lot already by making them. Mistakes that Dreamweaver and Frontpage probably never would've allowed me to make and learn from because they would've "done it for me"

I'm definately gonna check out that book as well!

I use Adobe GoLive CS2, and so far it's doing wonders for me.

One cool freebie software is AlleyCode, I've tried it also and I am happy with it. :)

If all fails, there's always the Notepad :D
