Hi what do you think are the best ways to monetize a website, for example a tutorial and "how to" website.

This can be general, or targetted at my site which i have not yet monetized, i can't use Google Adsense, and don't get enough traffic to effectively use affiliate programs.

    Any ideas?

    Hi there,

I'd say build up the traffic and then look at monetizing it with affiliate programs.

You could look at other contextual advertising networks other than Adsense - there are others out there that are much more forgiving.

You could also possibly sell your own products from it, depending on what it is, but again, that requires traffic!

    Cheers

First of all, you don't need a tremendous amount of traffic to make money. You can make money with a small amount of traffic but it's got to be the right kind....targeted.

    http://www.learntoearn101.net/2008/08/how-to-make-money-with-adsense.html

I know the above example is adsense which you can't use but it gives you the idea.

Anyway, if your 'how to' site is targeted, as mine is, you have several options.

You can use NeverblueAds, in my sig, for rotating ads the way google adsense for referral works

You can sign up at the various affiliate sites and pick the right product. For instance, I have a fashion advice site so use images from the affiliate sites (with the appropriate links) to demonstrate what I'm writing about. And my fashion site does not get a lot of traffic and I had no problem getting accepted into various affiate programs

    You've just got to try.

Traffic is the heart and soul for earning money. If you have traffic you can earn money using any of the money making programs.

I agree. Even though it can be tricky to monetize your website at first, once you get it that part of your work is largely over. Getting the traffic is what you will consistently be spending most of your time on for years to come.

I have a great website, however i cannot use adsense because when i first started web developing i was suspended and just like people know Google gave no answer for this.

So i need something different, i have tried text link ads but i am having a problem loading it on every page of my site as it shows an error code on my website when loaded. The home page comes up fine but every other page shows an error and nothing else.

    Anyone any ideas?

I have also tried performance ads however the same happened here, annoyingly though with both companies i sold advertising space with in the first day of setting it up.

So it is obvious my site can be monetized just i need something i can use.

I have used adbrite in the past and to be honest, its rubbish for a site in my field. They have no relevant adverts and make the site look unprofessional and they are ineffective. They are great for proxy sites, but not for my site.

Use some highly relevent technical articles to optimize your site, get the traffic, then find out what your visitors would be willing to buy via message boards or chat.
