Free directories will always be a good source of free links, however submitting to directories can be tedious.

Another way is emailing websites, asking for link exchanges, yet again this can be tedious and with little benefit.

The 3rd way is to create a site with unique content, that people link to because its a good read or the content is worthwhile for their visitors to visit.

    Article Submissions:

    - Send traffic to your site.
    - Have the Potential to become great links
    - May be able to artificially inflate the quality of other backlinks
    - Take a lot of time to get out and rolling
    - Give most control over anchor text and linking URLs without paying for it.

    Directory Submissions:

    - Are tedious
    - Rarely give you traffic
    - Rarely give you a quality link
    - Have little to no potential, but I have a theory that if you submit an article and point it at a crappy directory link page which resides on a PR5 directory, that you can artificially inflate its quality
    - Are good for getting a site indexed
    - Rarely allow deep links

    Link Bait:

    - Takes a long time to put together (research and building)
    - Gets high quality links.
    - Spreads virally and quickly
    - Little control over anchor text
    - Links go to link bait page, not to a URL of your choosing.

    Reciprocal Linking:

    - Rumored to no longer be viable (especially with google)
    - Many won't allow deep links
    - Great way to get QUALITY links of your choosing
    - Not discounted if linking sites are related to your own.
    - Sends some traffic to your site

Those are the main ones I can think of with their pros and cons.

    holla.

to get traffic for free is via link exchange I would say. Even though it's tedious but if you find a complement partner i.e. not your competitors, you will both gain.

Um .. you'll have to ask politely and put up the other parties' link on your website before requesting for a linkback.

I would look more towards developing reciprocal links with targeted traffic. Even using competitors in link exchange has worked for me. Link development for the purpose of getting a large amount is nice, but getting highly ranked pages in my industry to link to me has been more financially successful.

Because on DP there are usually hundreds of outgoing links on a page anyway, and the page content is both PR0 and rarely ever on the topic of your site

cant beat the good old ways, write some informative content or useful tool that has never been written before make a buzz about it in forums, then you get links naturally from word of mouth. Its a lot harder then it sounds tho.

Great idea arcguy. Follow mtb167 advice. It's almost the same concept I have right now.
