    i use a whole bunch to check on backlinks, most yahoo

    I think so, it is perfect to track competitor's backlinks.
    Google webmaster tools don't offer the data of your competitors backlinks.

    Backlinkwatch didnt work for me. Does it have a hard time with sites that have over a thousand links?

    I still use Yahoo site explorer which is enought for my needs, but i suppose if you want to pay for this service then fine.

    Google Webmaster tools allows you to watch your site links only, if you need to find you competitors links you should use Yahoo site explorer
