I wouldn't submit to directories until they've very high traffic directories or high Pr directories; but then these directories are mostly not free so you'll need to pay to be included most of the time. If you are going to submit to directories,

I don't think it would really matter for most sites unless you are manually tweaking the description in each. But I submitted to a larger site last night that sent me an email after submission giving me more instructions. An auto-submitter may not have followed those later instructions.

It doesn't if you use the right tools. People who spread the rumors are usually:
    1) People who do manual directory submissions for $.
    2) Directory owners as some automated submissions do not work very well and do spam their directories with incomplete listings, etc.
    3) People who heard that it doesnt work and try to spread the rumors.
    4) People who tried some retarded product a few years back that wasn't working for them or they didnt read the manual.

There are a few sites like easysubmits.com. I own quite a few directories myself and can tell that easysubmits works well. It is not fully automated since you still submit one-by-one, it pretty much fills out the form, suggests the category for you and wait till you type in captcha and click submit.

Just change your title and description every 50 submissions or so to target several keywords and it is as good as manual. After all it fills out the same form. If 500-600 directories is not enough for you (which is what easysubmits has right now), you can do manualy. Easysubmits does add more all the time, so login once a week and add to the new ones, it keeps track of the ones you visited.

I don't see why not use automated tools when there is no difference except that you are saving a few days/weeks of work. :)

The problem with free directories is most want t link back so it may not count as a inbound like. Is that right

No, a free directory is a free directory - no reciprocal requires. There are reciprocal directories as well. Look for a free list that do not require any reciprocal links. :) Easysubmits lists only the ones that don't require a link back. ;)

Where is the proof for your statements, guys? :) Don't just throw the words around, prove it if you can.

    1) Manual submission is effective. Nobody argues, it is effective. So is semi-automated.
    2) Better use manual. No reasoning behind the statement makes it useless.
    3) If you use any software and tool for submission than you got no result. I don't agree. Depends on what tool you use. Have you tried easysubmits? There is no difference between manual submission and easysubmits except the time you spend submitting is cut by 90%. Prove me wrong if you can. Once again, no reasoning or fact behind the comment makes it just another personal opinion.

You may want to check out the link I have in my sig - Traffic Bug submits to hundreds of directories, social bookmark, search engines and RSS aggregators on the internet.

Once again, personnal opinions. Anybody has any proven comment on why manual is better or why you even prefer it? Is it because you just like wasting time? :)
I agree with one thing - there is a lot of crappy software that doesnt work well or doesn't work at all, but look around, there is a ton that does work and works great!
