Best Way to Start The Semester At University

I am involved in planning the official start of the semester at a university (in Norway).

All new students will be attending, and we have to have some kind of official ceremony with some speakers, but I would also like to do something cool for the new students (like hire a rock band).

Do you have any suggestions or experience from your university/college?

    Thanks

    Jens

    make a welcoming party type,
official ceremony first and if you havent done so arrange uni tour, followed by lunch out to get to know each other and later some concerts or so.

A get together with the senior students in the form of welcome party as suggested by kaung would be better option to acclimatize the new comers with the seniors. It fosters friendship and make them understand about others and the new college environment and make the rest of their life in the college a pleasant one :)

we had jade goody at ours.... i suggest you dont do that.

i would go for a normal party because if you do fancy dress its not every ones cup of tea, how ever i am going to throw a idea at you! how about you do a Mad Hat and Underware party if you wear a hat or stupid underware (on top of your pants) you get a free shot of spirts. How it works is you give them a coupon for a free drink once they pay the $6.00 entry fee you then use the $6.00 to pay for the shot (so every one you give a coupn to you add $3.00 to the till). You make it the cheapist shot you can get for example give them a $3.00 free shot the club will then make $3.00 (what pays for the drink) and the extra $3.00 will be profit No one ever buys a shot on its own so odds are they will also buy a pint at the bar have your till staff say do you want that shot stright or make it into a vodka and coke for a extra $1.00 or make it a double for a extra $2.00 you might sell more as double and mixxers what again would be better profits for your night. Most people will want a drink any way to wash the shot away so you will have sold two drinks before they even start the night! if they dont have a hat or underware then you charge 6$ to get in to the club whats pure profit any way.

    hope this was helpful :)

First time she's been anywhere near a university!
In the UK freshers week usually revolves around copious amounts of alcohol, pizza, sorting out your fees and loan cheque, signing up to obscure clubs and various sexual antics in shop doorways.
    I miss it badly.
