Best way to start off a member base & attract members?

    How about a free trial? I like a free trial to let me test things out before deciding whether to spend money on something. :)

    Can you be a bit more vague?

    What's this service about? Does the community require a lot of activity from the users to be successful? Are there any established competitors? Do you offer anything extra when compared to them? Is the service commercial, freemium, ad supported or free?

    Asking generic questions will only yield you generic answers.
