Looking for tips or suggestions on best way to search for news on a specific topic. The only example I can think of is using google alerts as a means of getting daily emails on certain topics.

Personaly I use Google Alerts, but I think you need also to subscrite RSS from niche blogs and then you will recieve the newest informations. Also check some magazines you can download in PDF.
any daily news directory will give you ideas with topics... if you want something that is trending and people are actively typing on search engines. Your best bet would be to get the topic from an article directory or news directory for something new... and go on twitter and see if people are talking about it... also google updates daily sometimes more than daily their keyword tool is absolutely great for this...you get ideas as far as what others are actively searching for.
I subscribe to RSS feeds of various news sites. I have a personal Twitter account that follows the Twitter accounts of several news sites so if they have something new to share I am immediately notified. You just gotta love these social networking sites.
