Best way to reserve a domain name about to expire

I have my eye on a domain name that is going to expire in two weeks. What's the best way for me to reserve it so that I get it automatically if this person does not renew it?

Expire is different than pending delete - there is a redemption period. If you really want a domain, you should use SNAP and POOL to grab the domain. There are other backorder services, but these are the best. You really have to use a paid service if you want to have the best chance of getting the domain.

Thanks! Do you have to use both services or can you just use one of them? If one, which is best?

if it's an exotic domain, contact the owner to buy it. it's the cheapest way to get it in this case.
people bidding on snapnames are INSANE! they can spend 100K on a name that may only cost them 10K from the original owner.

You only pay if they acquire the domain, so I would use both.

So a guy letting a domain expire worthless is going to ask $10k for a domain he was going to drop for nothing? I've used SNAP and POOL many times only a couple of times did they even go to private auction. What expired domains had people bidding $100K?? It certainly wouldn't be the norm.

I didn't forget ENOM. There are ICANN rules about how many times their server can be hit to pick up a domain so SNAP and POOL have setup a bunch of sub-companies they use so they have a much greater chance of getting a domain than the others because of sheer numbers. It's their business and they are the best. The other backorder services are cheaper and are better than nothing - but not if someone wants the same domain and are using SNAP or POOL.

Check out Dnjournal.com. $100K is nothing compare to, for example, UncleSam.com which was grabbed for $187,500 last October.

I guess you only catch craps.

Many a times owners don't know what can be the best price for his domain. Also sometimes funny things happen like more than one person want is desperately stretching the bids to extreme.

I don't think you even understand what a backorder service is. There are no $100k backorders on expired domains.

yes, so the best thing to do with an exotic domain is to talk to the owner unless you are a multimillion domainer.

Backorders for expired domains pending delete have nothing to do with the person who used to own the domain. They get zero for the domain because they decided or forgot to renew it and let it expire. If a guy is going to let a domain expire for nothing, only an idiot would start off by offering them $10K for it.

When a domain is pending delete, the original owner is already out of the picture.

You didn't understand what I said.
    It was just an example.
Let's say UncleSam.com, which was bidded to $187,500 at Snapnames last Oct, may be bought for a fraction of that winning bid from the original owner in New Jersey.

    LMAO ROFL!!
Almost every domain that I backordered at Snapnames went into auction. There are just so many 5- and 6-figure winning bids used to give me huge WoWs.
I recommend you spend an hour to go through the domain sale chart of every year on Dnjournal.com. Just take a look at how many of the top-100 domains were sold at Snapnames and Pool.com.
Just to give you an idea:
    2007,
    18. Joystick.com $65,250 SnapNames 1/23/07.
    25.
    tie SexVedio.com (typo) $42,000 SnapNames 2/27/07
    27. SexVidoes.com (typo) $41,250 SnapNames 2/27/07

    in 2006
    17. Jasmin.com $310,250 SnapNames 2/28/06
    33. UncleSam.com $185,750 SnapNames 10/31/06
    35. HotelDeals.com $171,250 SnapNames 12/5/06

    Impressed you? :)

Maybe you should study the value of the domains that you are about to backorder before you waste the $60.

Like I said, you don't even know what you are talking about. We are talking about a backorder service for expired domains. Those high dollar domains like Jasmin.com, HotelDeals, etc. NEVER EXPIRED - they are 10 year old domains that were NEVER available via their backorder service.

You are confusing regular domain auctions with a backorder service for expired domains. UncleSam.com was owned for 12 years and NEVER expired, never went to the expired backorder service via POOL. POOL and SNAP both hold auctions for domains that have nothing to do with expired domains.

I've purchased semi-high dollar domains (five figures) - but that's not what we are talking about. I've used a backorder service many times - not for high dollar domains, but for domains that are likely to have some interest. The majority of expired domains grabbed by SNAP or POOL do not even go to a private auction.

    LMFAO ROFL AGAIN! LOL!!!

    UncleSam.com never dropped? See this :: http://www.mashup.com/temp/unclesam_bid.pdf

Many dropped domains maintain their original creation dates.

Like Auratek.com. It was dropped last year in October, but the creation date is still 1989. It was grabbed by the famous Bonkers as well.

Another example with Pool.com: BinLaden.com was sold at more than $50000 on Pool.com.

How could I backorder them and went into auctions without having them dropped?

Again, learn the difference between their public auctions and their private auctions. I can also list any domain I want in POOL's marketplace. If a domain has been dropped, it gets a new creation date. If a name was through network solutions, and a backorder was placed with SNAP prior to going through the pending delete, then it avoids this as the domain was never deleted. I have a feeling you have never bought a backordered domain before?
