I think a lot of it depends on the type of work you're having them do. WorkTime or something similar could work, or...some other metric to verify productivity. ODesk, a cloudsourcing site, uses something similar.

I look at it this way: instead of thinking how policing employees, ask yourself if you are challenging them appropriately and rewarding them for a good job. Good employees will jump at the opportunity for challenging work anyway. Good people want to accomplish things, so if you are hiring well, you shouldn't have to worry too much about slackers.

In my mind, I think if you wanna monitoring of your employees then Team-Viewer is best software for it.I am using this software for checking my brother's desktop from home because he is in Office. Please try in once.

Exactly that! If they like what they do, then they will work, else they wont. Putting restrictions in place doesn't help and usually they try find ways to get round it, meaning more problems arise.

Monitoring employees working from home can be complicated but as with the technology that we have right now, we can make use of the web conferencing. DutyWatch is great as you can monitor employees away from you through capturing every program used, every website visited, every keystroke made, even every instant message chat. Along with the computer monitoring system, you can also make use of the document sharing to monitor your employees. Yeah, I'm using a web-based product that functions as one (I mean all functions that I've mentioned), and the good thing here is that it's free. I can monitor my employees by letting them share their screen as well as chatting with them. I can also control the programs that my employees are using. By that, monitoring my employees is so easy. I'm using 321meet and I'm really enjoying it, fellas!

I have worked for a big mnc from home and they used monitor the end results using various online tools. It was effective and I guess better than actually monitoring workers. But then it depends on the the nature of the work the employee is doing.

If you don't trust them, you probably shouldn't employ them.

It really depends on the nature of the work, how your workers get paid (hourly or per project), time zones, etc. I would suggest you hire people from oDesk or use TeamViewer. Are you paying them by the hour that you need to monitor their every move? Or you just want to monitor progress? Closely monitoring your employees is not a bad thing, but too much of it can scare your employees and can affect productivity. For me the best way is to have constant communication (have them log on Skype or any IM), ask them for progress reports, and give them enough trust.
