Bompa, yours was the most lucid reply to this thread:

From what I've been able to garner from 9 years on the Warrior Forum, Google has TWO sets of indexes and they most definitely do NOT show us everything that is "under the hood"

You can have backlinks out the wazzoo, and Google's webmaster tools will be very, very stingy with displaying (or revealing) what it knows about your site's backlinks.

I saw a Matt Cutts youtube where someone asked him this same question and he deftly side stepped the real answer and suggesting the use of Yahoo site explorer (which he recommended highly) now why would Matt Cutts talk up a competitors product?

Because big G keeps it's cards close to it's chest.

I agree with Bompa, you're not ever *really* gonna know.

Numerous WF posts reveal that Google doesn't like to *tip it's hand* and displays a tiny fraction of backlinks we all know damn well Google spidered.

I'm of the opinion that using Picasaweb NOT for photos but for backlinks is helping my sites rank well and my clients sites ranking well.

You are not likely to see picasaweb photos turn up in the serps.
(can we say "afraid of anti-trust"?)

that does NOT mean Google didn't see the backlink posted to a photo's caption. I'm also of the opinion that the lack of anchor text functionality in Picasaweb's caption is there to deter most from what I just revealed.

I'm saying the backlinks from picasaweb help, but you'll never see evidence of that from a serp or a backlink checker tool.

and I found http://findmypagerank.com (also from a WF thread) to add to the list of useful link checking tools in this thread.

backlinkcheck.com and backlinkfinder.com using the same script. Both are working just fine with many useful statistics. I have found backlinkwatch.com working too but the site is full of Ads. It is using different script.

I use Google Webmaster Tools. But from now on I will be checking these Tools too. They are cool.

I usually check my backlinks using backlinkwatch. What I like about this online tool is that it shows you not only the BLs, but the anchor text, pagerank, number of outbound links on that webpage, and nofollow flag for each of the inbound link.

I have tried many of the websites suggested here for checking backlinks and they all give wildly different results. So reckon I'll stick to webmaster tools.

But a question on using link:www.mydomain.com on Google. If I use the word links rather than link I get a much larger result, that actually seems more accurate. Any thoughts on using link v links ? ie links:www.mydomain.com

After reading all your comments and suggestion, I still use the Google webmaster tool to check my backlinks. I found that backlink finder is not that accurate because I have my site which is PR1 and when I check it with the backlink finder it says that the PR of that site is PRO which is not true.
