What's the best way to handle 404 traffic regarding Google optimization?

Figured I'd bump this since someone decided to comment on it.

First off, I did search and I didn't see anything that wasn't super dated info.

What I was fishing for here was if anyone was doing any filtering with their 404s, so that if they came from a dead URL or page that was about dog breeds, the 404 wouldn't just send them to a homepage, but would either send them to a page with related content, or even create dynamic content.

    Apparently I'll be the first
