We all need traffic for our websites. Its the basic need for your website or blog. That's the only way your online business will survive.
For long i have been trying to figure out traffic strategies and sincerely i have gotten many ebooks (hundreds) to help me with the traffic strategies. But not all has helped me, i felt that some used me to boost their subscriber list and others snatched me money. The best way for me to go was not to give up even though i felt that i was almost. I decided to go and do research myself. There i was, spying on my competitors and top pros in my niches. The best way to get traffic is not to try as many techniques as possible. It is focusing in few major source that guarantees massive traffic. Why am i saying that you focus on a few? It is because that's what the experts are doing.
The best way that i have found so far and what i use to know what to focus is by using Alexa. Most people don't use alexa as an important tool.
Alexa can help you know where a website gets traffic and which is its best traffic source.
So which part of it will show? Its the clickstream. When you visit a website's details in alexa you should check out it's clickstream and you can see where and how much traffic it gets in percentage. Attached is an image showing a screenshot of alexa screenshot af a top website in my niche.

That is some great information. I have never really used Alexa that way. It does bring up a couple questions concerning your image, though.

If you were looking at that graphic would you be choosing to focus on Google Search traffic since that is where the bulk of their traffic comes from, or would you be stepping down the chart trying to get into the traffic stream at an easier entry point like Facebook, Twitter, or WF?

What many people dont realize is that when you look at google as a source of traffic it is not only through the search engine itself. There is one strategy that people dont see with google. I have been researching through the same alexa tool and you may realize that a website receives 16% from google. But looking at it deeper in the details you might find that the same alexa tool tells you that it gets 4% from the search engines. Where is the 8% coming from? Its coming from what many people arent talking about. The google groups. Give it a shot. Its can be a big traffic source. And also keep checking the details from alexa. It might just take some time before you take control of it.
