I agree. There are many ways to generate free traffic, but building links are definately a good one for long term traffic. I specialize in getting free traffic, and I have seen this time and again.
Blog commenting is good but most high PR blogs never accept our submission as blog owner never want to create link with a new site.
That's why it's a good idea to try and build a relationship with the blog owner, instead of just asking for a link. There is an art to getting a great link from a blog, and it has nothing to do with the comment section as many people believe. You need to get them to write an article about your site and link to it that way. This might take a little longer to accomplish, but the link is going to be of much more value than if you just throw something up in the comments.
