Best way to drive traffic to my site

How to drive traffic to this site which was launched in 2002 as right now, my analytics says it currently has 3,789 in "visits" column....not sure if that's per day or week or? In any case, I have written a ton of articles on it....some appear in articlebase . Or article alley, I have a good links page with a categorized page of link partners, have it listed in DMOZ, also has a page rank of #5 and it's also in a bunch of specialized directories including listed on FaceBook + I have several keywords throughout, so people searching big G can find it easy and it does show up relatively easy in many search term results pages.
But my basc question is DRIVING TRAFFIC. I won't buy it as those are all scams and I don't want to get penalized by the SE bots.

well, yes, SEO...that is why I mentioned adding keywords in my description, getting it backlinked in DMOZ and tried listing it in high ranking directories etc.

I did all this...got backlinked on sites with "supposed" high page rank, listed my URL using descriptive keywords in article sites, used PR services to email out promotional emails to opt-in recipients, based on my site's business, listed the URL in various key search engines....so all of this SEO is done. What else can be done? Anyone creative out there? Any hints, tips, techniques etc. are apprewciated. SEO like what's previously mentioned is done on my end but looking for other avenues.

PS: Not sure buying links is the tried & true method anyway because I heard Google and the big engines eventually see this and "penalize" you.

SEO is best too, but also try bookmarking and forum posting related to your site with your Signatures.

your site is not optimized at all, the cartoons that you have on the site are not targeted to any keywords and you have not used any alt tags/targeted file names for your images, over all there is plenty to do from the seo point of view.

also, i guess your site needs a good design, perhaps you should consider to put some of the good cartoons in rotation on your homepage.

Nice work getting it to PR 5! But like the other poster said you really need to redesign the sight, its kind of an eye sore. Also spending some more time over in the SEO section of DP would not hurt, but what you said of your SEO exploits earlier you are on the right path.

Now, driving traffic and not paying for it. While you are sprucing up and SEOing your site a little better, get yourself a twitter account and actively build a following in your niche. There are several threads in the social networking section on DP that explain how to get followers and different tools to make you Twitter life easier like Hootsuite and Twitter Karma (very important). When you get a good healthy twitter account start tweeting your articles, FB pages, new cartoons, whatever. I find twitter can bring you significant amounts of traffic.

Yeah, the site doesn't look very 'pretty'. It needs an overhaul - but do NOT change any URLs. Definitely add meta and alt tags to all your pages/images. Also your landing page is a wall of text and you need to scroll to see an image. Drop the wall of text and summarise into bullet points, if you need to say something in more detail about licensing or payment, have a big fat button/link on each image or image page somewhere really obvious, and put the heavy text in that.

Hooley dooley ... had a good look through your site and it is all .htm ... talk about dating back to the dark ages! I have a cartoon website myself but have done it all in Drupal. Fortunately I had everything in subdirectories when it was just html so I had paths like mydomain.com/comics/nursecomics or whatnot so it was easy to change over. Yours ... ergh. Could take quite a bit of work to overhaul it. You've have to be pretty brave ...

Well basically you must know that there are on-page and off-page SEO and then just google all the information you need about them and start using what you have learned.
