Definetely go with a domain and wordpress. If you have a strong enough niche, you can use a landing page with a /blog/ area, but if not, make the blog front and center.

I just started a wordpress blog and was lucky enough to get mine to a PR3 in a couple of months. I have read (here mainly) that google loves blogs with original content and once you get a wordpress up it can be fun promoting it.

If you want to start a webmaster blog you should know a lot about web mastering. It does not sound like you know a lot about that since you wonder what content you should write. Why don`t you make a blog about something you really know very well. Then you would know what to write and write interesting stuff because you know what other withe the same interest needs to read about.

You should choose a domain if u are serius about blogging.
You write what you have more interest and know about.

To attract visitor you should write quality content and add content regularly.

You've got to know your subject. If you expect to write on a subject based solely on a few google searches, you are going to fail. If you don't know the subject, do yourself the favor and make sure you know it before you start writing.

There are a lot of big time webmaster blogs and even more small time webmaster blogs. You'll be fighting an uphill battle trying to get any traffic and may want to explore less saturatede niches.

Where you put the blog doesn't matter so much if you do your SEO and advertise it properly.

Whether it is in the domain or the domain/blog/ depends more on your site design than on anything else. You'll still get the SE boost of constant new content in either and as long as the blog is integrated properly, you can put it anywhere you want.
