Whats the best way to clean an LCD? I have heard a damp cotton cloth is the best so the screen is not scratched.

I would say that is one of the better methods, yes. However, I used to buy special LCD cleaning-kits (unfortunately the name of the product eludes me right now...) and they really did the trick...

thanks...I had a friend spew beer onto my laptop, and although I got it pretty much clean (it wasn't a lot and didn't damage the laptop), I still have some residue.

Get those silk eyeglass wipes from a glasses store like lenscrafters. Work like magic on LCDs, TVs, car windshields (inside not outside) and clean easy in a washer. I have like 10 of them scattered everywhere!

Yes. Windex has ammonia in it. It will (eventually) destroy your LCD.

Also, never use windex to clean the inside of an empty fish tank. The fish will die after you refill it with water :p
