    yes the keyword tool in google adwords is pretty helpful. Be sure to cross reference the amount of searches a keyword has against it's popularity though. You don't want to be competing with hundreds of millions of other websites with the same keywords.

    You can also try Google Insight I find it more useful since you can see the geographical result for your keywords. :)

    Google's keyword tool is good, but I'd cross check the results with the seobook results (just Google keyword tools). And look at the "Trends" as well, some items are really seasonal, and keep in mind you're looking at the previous months search results (December results really differ from January in some markets).

    I'd also download TrafficTravis (free version) to get a good look at backlinks, domain age, keywords in - title,header,url, etc. Or use the Firefox browser and seoquake addon (free). Even though there may not be much competition the sites you're going up against could be very well SEO optimized.
