Best way to building links

I am trying to SEO my father’s site, it’s a hotel site and he is very dependant on good rankings. So I want to help him rank better but I also want to avoid getting banned by google in the process as that would hurt his business a lot. I have managed to improve his rankings from nr 200 to nr 6 in two weeks on Google. But now I am targeting more competitive words on a national level instead of just concentrating on the town where the hotel is.

I have done all the onsite stuff like h1 tags, title key word etc.

Now I am link building. I need about 500 links to get anywhere. These are the steps I have done to build links.

    1. Submitted site to the big directories such as dmoz, yahoo etc.

    2. Joined linkmarket.net exchanged about 80 links. Got 80 outbound and 80 inbound from here. Most sites have PR 2-5 but the links are often placed on PG 0-1 pages along with 20-40 other links. Most links are with other hotels but in other countries. Is it worthwhile at all to participate in link exchange such as link market? Some people say link exchange is dead? After 1-2 weeks I only see 2 backlines listed by MSN and Yahoo that I got from link market exchange. Why is it that I only see 2 links? I know I have more then 80. Does it take a long time for the engines to detect the links or have they ignored them as bad links?

    3. Joined Lin Vault. I just got the ads running yesterday and I have set a limit to 5 links per day. Is participating in link vault likely to get the site banned by google? Will the link vault links get listed as back links and will it help my ranking?

    4. Massive email link exchange requests to every web site in my region and to 300 hotels in my area. I used Web CEO to do it. So far not a single one wanted to trade links. Bahh... My site is well designed and ranked better then 95% of these idiots and still no link exchange.

    5. The website I am promoting also has a restaurant. So I devised a cunning plan of writing a cooking article along with some recipes with link to the web site in the bio. I submitted the article to 30.000 sites with articlesender.com. It has not been sent out yet.

    6. Mass email again. This time targeting cooking websites offering to donate my article alongside nice professional pictures of the dishes in exchange of a good link. So far 0 result.

Does the above 6 steps sound like a good strategy for building links? Any suggestion of what I can do and how to do it better? Am I being to aggressive and risk getting the site banned for building links to quick? The site is one year old, it has just not been promoted before.

Today I have 32 links listed by MSN :( I need 500, and I know I have 150 but only 32 listed. Why is that? I got all my new links the past 1-2 weeks.

Having content is the best way to get natural content I know. But this is a hotel and I don’t want to add a lot of content and clutter the site. I can see no way I can entice people to link to a hotel site because of good content. Any tips?

Best regards and hoping for some advice,

Firstly I am not sure that the articlesender site actually submits the article to 30,000 sites.
Article submission is a great seo tool and you should be writing articles on what to do around the local area, tourist attractions and loads of related subjects. Maybe even a guide to running a hotel?

Display the best articles on your site as well as submitting them to quality article sites and you will build good content.

Also the key to ranking in google is not just links. Google values old links higher so if you suddenly get loads of links you can't expect good rankings straight away.

If you want quality links from local sites then bulk emailing is not the answer - everybody ignores them. You need to build natural links by talking to local sites and working with them. Exchange links with local pubs etc and actively recommend them with a written review rather than just a link.

Post your url here as there may be some onsite seo that needs to be done too.

There are good directory submission services on this site, I paid $10 for 200 manual submissions yesterday.

That sounds interesting. I was woried using a submission service could get me in trouble for spamming. But if you say it´s a good idea i trust you. Manual submission sounds safe. Can you give me an URL to the service you used?

My site URL is pensionatullevi.se. I am now concentrating on these key words, Hotell småland, Konferens småland and Västervik. The competion for Västervik is 2 550 000 but no one is realy doing SEO. The nr1 is a goverment site that i dont think i can top but a top 5 should be possible? I think i need about 500 incoming links though.

I have recently done some changes that i hope will get me a better ranking for Västervik, i am now nr 29 in Google and nr 13 in MSN. I added some text links to on site pages with the text Västervik on them on my index page. The site has not been re-crawled yet so i hope it will make a diff once it does. I have tried to add h1 and h2´s. Problem with h1´s is that they will mess up my site layout so i applied a css on them. I think i got it to work? Will google see them as h1 even if i have the css applied?
If anyone can give me pointers on how to onsite SEO further please let me know. I know i should have a text based navigation menu but it will mess up my layout so i added text links to 4 of the most important pages instead.b That link vault thing is ugly enough already.

Thanks for all the help so far,

Interesting that you pointed this out mad4 :)
Yes the many versions of the homepage need to be taken into consideration many websites I've seen their page http://website.com/ with PR whereas when you type http://www.website.com/ the PR is 0!

Why the 500 links? Well i see my worst competitors have around 500 links so i figured i have to get that to have any hopes of getting in to top 5.

I still don´t understand why only 30 of my 150 incoming links are listed by MSN and Yahoo? Google link listing of course sucks, it shows 1 link. Is it because the links are new and have not been crawled yet or is it because the links sucks? I try to chose reasonably good link partners.

Assuming you have an apache server create a file called .htaccess (this is the filename, not the extension) and put it in the same folder as your index.htm file.

Put the following in the .htaccess file (using a text editor).

    RewriteEngine on
    RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^pyramidlinking.com
    RewriteRule (.*) http://www.pyramidlinking.com/$1 [R=301,L]
    RewriteCond %{THE_REQUEST} ^[A-Z]{3,9}\ /index\.htm\ HTTP/
    RewriteRule ^index\.php3$ http://www.pyramidlinking.com/ [R=301,L]

    Code (markup):
This is the code for my site so you need to alter the domain name.

This code will redirect all the versions of the homepage to the www.domain.com version. If you want to redirect to another version then this code needs to be altered.

Pyramid Linking is about a week old. We have 200 members and they have 400 active campaigns.:)

I have now done the redirect with the .htaccess as you suggested. Did i get it to work? When i go to urlhttp://pensionatullevi.se/ it seems to redirect to urlhttp://www.pensionatullevi.se/ but when i go to urlhttp://www.pensionatullevi.se/index.htm it does not seem to redirect?
Thanks for all your help, greatly apreciated.
