Best Way to Build Social Platform

What is the best language to use to build a social platform similiar to facebook but with more features like Ning. I want it "high powered" enough so it will handle a continueous increase in visitors.

 

facebook is in PHP and use mysql. they remake some part for load problem in C, java and other after for the backend.

in fact it all depends on witch part and what is your skill. optimal performance is probably PHP(or other runnuing under Apache) in front-end and a C backend. but backend will be a lot of work. I would go for java or PHP at frontend with a java backend to make time to devellop a bit shorter
