Hi DP members, I'm new to the blogging concept, I was trying to see if I can get some pointers on how to get blogging software. I've already registered a domain name at godadddy, I tried playing around with their quick blog, that didn't work very well. Thanx in advance.

If you're new at this, I would suggest using wordpress as your CMS. There are also many great free themes out there you can use.

I'm new to the whole site developement in general. Is that where I would go to wordpress.org and download it? Also, would I be able to use it at godaddy? Or would I have to use one of their hosts?

Wordpress for sure....very simple installation...perfect for beginners..lots of free themes also available.

Yes you need a hosting service.

If you do not want to pay for hosting you can go to blogger.com and use their service for free. It does not give you as much control as having your own host but it is very user friendly and you can use your own domain name. When you get better or your blog grows and you want to go with your own hosting service, you can switch your domain name and I believe you can transfer blogger contact to word press software.

I have my own hosting but I still prefer my blogs at blogger.com and it is so easy to add elements, ads, and to use adsense. They are also owned by Google, so I think they will be around a long time.

    Good luck!

No, what I hear GoDaddy hosting service sucks, look for a cheap hosting service on here or do a google search.

You can use any host....there are many cheap ones available as well..or you can buy hosting from a reseller.

If you use a free hosting service like blogger... you won't be able to use your domain name.

I suggest you buy your hosting from a reseller instead of using a free service.

It would be a good learning experience to setup your own site :).

It is a very simple process...once you do it..you would be able to setup other simple scripts too.

Thanx for the replies so far. So if I've already paid for a year's worth of hosting at godaddy, what would you recommend?

Yes you can use your own domain and very easy to set up. Check out the last one in my sig (North Country). It is at blogger and has my own domain name.

Nope not FTP either, you can have your domain go right to blogger and use it just like if you had a blogspot address. In fact your blog works with either address.
Almost like an add-on domain on a hosting control panel.
