How do you all optimize the images on your site? If you use photoshop, and save for web, what quality do you use?
I use 75% JPG for most stuff. Higher or lower depending on the image. If I need to batch optimize images, I use Photoshop > Automate > Batch
oh my goodness never lower than 85% JPEG is supposed to be used for photographs only, I don't even use them for non-photo graphics. I'm a big fan of PNG, which can save smaller files than GIF (so the only time to use a GIF is with animtation, and never any other time) Sadly, to do stuff properly you need to hand-bake each file, because all files are different.....that is if you're a pro
Sorry for digging this up but I have a better way to batch optimize web graphics for your site: http://www.converthub.com/batch-image-converter/ It's capable of batch converting image formats and resizing them.
It all depends on the image. I mostly hover between 70% and 80%. A photo with a lot of varying colors works with 70%. One with large areas of a single (almost flat) color needs a higher settings, so I use 80%. Just a note: for artworks (converted from vector files, for example) it's better to use GIF or 8-bit PNG. To batch optimize, you should create actions first and then use the batch function. But since particularities of images might require special attention for each, it's not always a good idea. You might want to batch optimize in groups or something. Like images that look alike together for best results.
