for links that follow, what is the difference between adding rel="external" and adding nothing at all? does it just tell the SE's that it point to an external site? does this give it more weight?

I'm no expert, but I believe the rel="external nofollow" tag just tells Google not to pass any link juice...

yea, but what about simply "external"? maybe this helps google identify it from an internal link, thus giving a tad extra weight. just wondered if anybody knew for sure.

Yes... the nofollow prevents search engines to be index each url which uses the nofollow.
