Best Way of Finding Niche for Ecommerce Store

    Hey Everyone,

I'm relatively new to the e-commerce scene but I recently opened a new store based on a hobby/passion of mine but I know that doesn't necessarily make it a profitable niche. I need some help in finding a profitable niche for e-commerce in particular. What are some of the steps? How do you separate the good ones from the bad?

    Thanks

Well, try another passion or at least something you're interested in. Find out the biggest products and brands. Do those companies seem like they're doing pretty well. Talk to them about becoming a reseller. See what the margins are, etc.

Don't try to compete with big name brands in certain niches (e.g. electronics) because their market is saturated. Stay away from nutritional niches because this niche is saturated also and you should have license in that field to give an expert opinion same thing also applies to pharmaceutics. You can visit trade shows to find the next hottest product or niche or branch further out with the niche you're currently passionate with. It also helps to talk to people to get a general idea of their wants vs needs and go from there.

You can start by just thinking about what's NOT available, that you'd like to see, that involves your passion. I mean, what type of web site service or product have you searched for but haven't been able to find? Or, in forums like these, what trends are you seeing that people are always asking about?

The competition is way too big. I suggest you to go to Ebay Pulse or Google Products and see what is hot first, then when you found something that you like, search it in Google Keywords or something similar to that to check our your competition (and monthly search count etc). You definitely wouldn't want to start an ecommerce site with giant competitors like Microsoft or NewEgg.
