Best Video Format for Downloading

Hi have a client who sells a video online that I have ripped from her DVD. Right now it's in .AVI format, and then I zip it (so that it doesn't play when the customer clicks to download). A lot of people are having problems with the video not playing (because the DivX codec isn't installed).

Does anyone have a better solution for the deliver of this video? Right now I have the purchaser forwarded to a download page after they pay with PayPal. The page contains a link to the zip file.

    Thanks.

    H264 encoded.

It's HD and the same file size as a much smaller non H264 encoded file. I believe Quicktime Pro will encode it, amongst other free tools like Cinerama and likely mencoder.

It will play in quicktime for sure, and VLC and a lot of other players so they shouldn't have codec problems on any operating system.

    hope this helps!
