best solution for a large business

What is the best shopping cart package for a large business? I'm thinking in terms of thousands of products and a fairly high volume of traffic. Normally I've used osCommerce or Virtuemart, but it was for smaller, Mom & Pop outfits.

I'm interested in both kinds of shopping carts, the hosted ones like 1shoppingcart as well as the ones installed locally like osCommerce.

While accurate you need to tune the server a bit your best bet is clearly Magento. http://www.magentocommerce.com/

    Community edition is fine.

    hope that helps,
    Nigel

If you are really planning to make a huge ecommerce business, i would recommend you to have licensed version of AJ shopping Cart, which could help you to manage your business in a friendly manner.

I would probably go with Magento, or a custom solution that integrates with existing techologies. Magento can do just about anything, but custom integrations can be very difficult and expensive.

Anything for a smaller budget? I'm thinking of a website with this level of content http://www.xtremediesel.com/. Also are there any online shopping cart solutions that would be suitable?

well magento is free, you also have tons of modules from providers like aheadworks.com, it's realy nice and I think also solid. Also the company behind magento seems very professional with their enterpise editions of the software so it's defently looks like a long run business and a great team behind it.

For the expand of the e commerce business then you must register under the Data Protection Act if you collect any kind of information about people, these are your customers, employees or potential customers. This information includes names, addresses, phone numbers and email addresses. You should know exactly what you do and want to do with your subject's data and not deviate from the statement.

You should checkout Netsuite. It's a very robust e-commerce tool with integrated ERP system. I've seen some demos. Its cool, but not cheap. I think its over 10K a year.

The e-commerce solution somewhat depends on how much support in-house you have. I mean, if you're the only one who is technically capable of setting up/managing site and you leave the business at some later date, the business could be left in position where it's scrambling for support. If you go with a commercial/paid product then the support will be provided by the developer.

I just did a review of what is currently available, kinda led me to the conclusion Magento community edition was the sensible choice.

I would say Magento too. It seems to be the best enterprise solution out there now
